Ashbury Satcom - Using Your Inmarsat BGAN
• FOR 24 HOUR CUSTOMER CARE AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT PLEASE DIAL 590# from your satellite phone, or +1 709 748-4226# from any other phone.
• When you first receive your BGAN, put it on charge the same way as you would do with a new cellular phone. While it is charging, install the BGAN launchpad on your computer.
• Once fully charged, switch the BGAN on and go and put it flat in an open area with horizon-to-horizon view of the sky – this will enable it to see the GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites - in order to obtain a GPS fix. Now connect your computer to the BGAN.
• Now open the BGAN launchpad. It will show you various useful bits of information, such as whether or not the GPS fix has been updated. Once the GPS fix has been obtained for your current location (renewed), the launchpad will give advice on how to position the terminal in order to pick up the Inmarsat satellite’s signal.
• It is not even necessary to follow the pointing instructions in the Launchpad – simply scan the horizon while holding the terminal with the flat antenna panel facing the sky. Sooner or later it will give visual and/or audible indication of where it finds signal. The launchpad also has a signal level indicator.
• Once you are satisfied with the signal you have, click “register on the network” in the BGAN launchpad. It is also possible to do this step without the launchpad, by means of using the buttons on the terminal.
• Once registered, open a STANDARD data connection in order to use your email or the internet. It is also possible to configure the launchpad to do this automatically.
• To make a call: Use the international number format of 00 or +, followed by the country code, area code (without the leading zeros) and telephone number. ALSO, remember to press # after dialing a number to connect the call.
• Now enjoy surfing the internet with your BGAN, and be sure to reference our document on “Best Practices for Inmarsat Data Connections” which is on one of the CDs that came with your BGAN. It contains important tips on how to limit your Inmarsat airtime consumption.
