Iridium is the most popular option for voice-only or narrowband data applications. The Iridium satellite phones has world-wide coverage and a very affordable, simple pre-paid plan. Specialised hardware for ships, aircraft, vehicle tracking, and telemetry is also availble. More details here.

The Inmarsat BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) satellite terminals are the most popular option for high quality voice and broadband internet. The terminals are highly portable and easily fits into a laptop bag. The Inmarsat BGAN satellite terminals will by the end of 2008 have world-wide coverage. The Inmarsat BGAN product family also includes versions for ships and aircraft. More details here.

Thuraya currently makes the smallest and fanciest of all the satellite phones, and one model can even accommodate a normal GSM (cellular) SIM card. Coverage however is regional only (see the map), and the phone can only do up to 33kbps internet - but if you're only travelling inside the coverage area and you don't need fast internet, it is a nice phone. VSAT. Very Small Aperture Terminal. Though all our portable satellite phones and terminals can be installed in fixed or semi-fixed environments, they can be costly to use for data applications on a regular or heavy-use basis. Therefore, if you have a requirement that is at a permanently fixed remote location, for example a remote office building where portability is not an issue, then a VSAT is the perfect satellite communication solution for you.
